Winter Wellness: Protect Yourself and Support the NHS
The NHS in Hertfordshire and West Essex is under significant pressure this winter due to a surge in flu cases and other seasonal illnesses. By taking proactive steps, you can protect yourself, your loved ones, and help NHS services focus on those who need urgent care.
How You Can Help
- Stay Up to Date with Vaccinations:
- Ensure you and your family have had flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines. These are especially important for older adults, people with underlying health conditions, and pregnant women.
- Contact your GP practice or local pharmacy for availability. Find out if you’re eligible and locate participating pharmacies on the Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board website.
- Manage Illness at Home When Appropriate:
- Norovirus: Stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Wash hands with soap and water frequently (hand gels won’t kill norovirus). Avoid visiting hospitals, care homes, or social gatherings until you’re symptom-free for 48 hours.
- Flu: Rest, hydrate, and use simple painkillers if necessary. Stay away from others until you’ve been symptom-free for 48 hours.
- Seek Medical Advice Wisely:
- Use NHS 111 online or call 111 for urgent medical advice or if you’re unsure what to do. Mental health support is also available—choose option 2 when calling.
- Visit your pharmacist for advice on minor illnesses like sore throats, UTIs, and sinusitis. If needed, they will refer you to a GP or another healthcare professional.
- Support Your GP Practice:
- Use online consultation tools when possible and avoid calling at peak times (e.g., 8am). Check your GP practice website for details on accessing services.
- Assist with Hospital Discharges:
- If a family member is ready to leave hospital, ensure they can return home promptly to free up beds for seriously unwell patients.
